Research Interests:

I am broadly interested in behavioral ecology, life-history theory and evolution. These days, I’m mostly interested in thinking about the evolution of life-history strategies in the context of ecological pressures. Specifically, I am interested in the adaptations that long-lived animals have evolved to cope with fluctuations in resource availability. I am especially interested in these questions as they apply to pelagic seabirds. To explore this issue, I combine demographic data with colony-based monitoring of breeding behavior. My current study species are Cassin’s auklets and ashy storm-petrels, which I study on the Farallon Islands. In the past, I’ve also worked extensively with Leach’s storm-petrels in Nova Scotia, Manx shearwaters in Wales and lesser black-backed gulls in the Netherlands.
